What does “Support” on Social Media Look Like?

Even though I do not buy every book or donate to every charity, I have a strategy to support those I connect with on social media. It is free to comment, share or like what you read (if you enjoyed reading it or think it is essential for others to know). I never feel obligated to do so. There was a time in my life I despised salespeople. Why? Because it felt like I could not have a conversation with a salesperson without having some service or product pushed down my throat. I now take a more holistic view of salespeople; they are seeking support. I started understanding that some either think they can change your mind (adrenaline rush influencer) or are simply attempting to make a living. Either way, I have learned to say no in the most empathetic way when necessary but I also remain open-minded to a potential purchase.

I wrote this article because I realize that support means different things to different people. In Dictionary.com (2021), the verb support means to be actively interested in and concerned for success of (you fill in the blank). Support can take on multiple forms physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. Now, let’s add the element of social media regarding support. I constantly ask myself- Why do I engage in social media? What outcomes am I seeking? Am I there to learn, curious, or purely for entertainment purposes?
